Game Room Glory!
A great way to add value to your existing property is to finish the basement into a game room. It will not add square footage to your home but it will add value. Technically, square footage of a home is the living area above ground level (this is where your yard meets the exterior of the home). This generally excludes basements. However, when remodeled they can add extra space for a childs playroom, workshop, gun room, home office, craft room, or a gameroom.
For your DIY enthusiasts, take note. Consider these things first if you want to do the project right.
1. Address a leaky basement first.
2. Partition mechanical equipment off from the living area. With access doors for future equipment maintenance.
3. Consider adding a powder room for conveince at the basement level.
4. Repair piping and electrical wiring prior to adding any finished materials.
5. Consider heating & ductwork configurations & install alternate heating options.
5. Have a plan and be flexible with both your budget and your timeline.
